Puntagorda is one of the 14 communities on the Canary Island of La Palma . The administrative center is the town of the same name, while El Pinar is the largest town.
geography
Puntagorda is located in the northwest of La Palma and borders in the north with the Barranco de Izcagua on the municipality of Garafía and in the south with the Barranco de Garome on the municipality of Tijarafe . The community is characterized by agricultural vegetable growing, species-rich vegetation and a large number of almond trees . The village of Puntagorda is the administrative center in a gently sloping area at about 600 meters above sea level. The climate is dry and sunny, with a lot of rainfall in winter.
history
The indigenous people ( Benahoaritas ) left significant traces in the remains of buildings and caves (pictures, piles of stones, canals and pots).
The first town arose in the San Mauro area in the 16th century . One of the first churches in the Canary Islands was built here and already received benefices . The largely Portuguese population made San Mauro their patron saint. They cleared the Canary Islands pine to turn the land into arable fields. They also ran cattle and built cisterns for water supply. The place had its own granary for storing grain. The original location was abandoned and moved to another, higher location. It is located between the centers of Cuatro Caminos , El Pinar , Fagundo and El Roque .
The unfavorable political and economic conditions at the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century forced many residents to leave the island or move to other communities. Today, a large proportion of the population is foreign and has seen moderate growth that has made its residents somewhat more affluent.
