General

The municipality of Breña Alta gained independence in 1634. Breña Alta and Breña Baja are preferred places to live in La Palma's capitals , with pretty houses and well-tended gardens dominating the scene. The community still lives mainly from agriculture at an average altitude of 400 meters.

In San Pedro de Breña Baja is a center of the cigar manufacture. A large part of the thick puros (the pure ones ) consumed on the island are rolled here in small workshops . The tobacco used for this is grown in the area. The handcrafted Palmerian puros were also preferred by Winston Churchill .

The dragon trees, some of which are several hundred years old, are located near San Isidro .

El Císter Monastery

The Cistercian monastery of Santísima Trinidad (also known as Monasterio El Císter ) is located in Breña Alta .
