Breña Baja (own name: La Muy Noble y Honorable Villa de Breña Baja ) is one of the 14 communities in the east of the Canary Island of La Palma . The seat of the administration is in San José. It stretches as a narrow strip from the sea up to the ridges of the Cumbre Vieja and is predominantly agricultural. Down by the sea is the tourist settlement Los Cancajos, also part of the municipality of Breña Baja, with one of the few bays in La Palma.

Surname

Breña means dry area overgrown with thorn bushes . Baja means lower, lower and differentiates this municipality from the neighboring municipality of Breña Alta ( Upper Breña ).

Townscape

Well-tended houses and gardens define the townscape. Owners are often former, well-off residents of Santa Cruz de La Palma , who commute to work in the island's capital every day. The houses of Breña Baja are scattered across the landscape. The parish church of San José got its present appearance in the 18th century.
