CKY (short for Camp Kill Yourself ) is an alternative rock / alternative metal band from West Chester , Pennsylvania , USA , which was founded in 1998 and is best known for the TV series Viva La Bam and Jackass , as well as the Jackass films attained. The band's drummer, Jess Margera, is the brother of Bam Margera . CKY has sold over a million CDs worldwide.
history
1992–1998: Foundation and early years
The band's beginnings can be traced back to 1992, when Deron Miller and Jess Margera met in high school in West Chester, Pennsylvania. Together they founded the experimental metal band Foreign Objects in 1994 . In 1996 they decided to take a different musical direction, put Foreign Objects on hold and formed the band Oil , which had a more radio-friendly sound. Furthermore, the bassist Ryan Bruni joined the band, who was not in the studio, where Miller played the guitar and bass, but only used at concerts. When they wanted to record their first album in the studio in 1997, they met Chad I Ginsburg, who worked there as a producer. Enthusiastic about their song Disengage the Simulator , he joined the band as an additional guitarist and producer. Together they decided to change their sound again and in 1998 they renamed themselves Camp Kill Yourself at Miller's suggestion . This name was abbreviated a short time later and from then on they appeared as CKY .
1998–2002: Volume 1 and first successes
The recordings for their first studio album were completed in 1998 and the completed work was released on February 27, 1999 under the name Volume 1 on the indie label Teil Martin International . On the same day, the band also released Volume 2 , which served as the soundtrack of the Bam Margera-produced skate video CKY and is now a hard-to-get collector's item. After they had played on the Warped tour in the USA in 1999 and 2000 and also released the EP Disengage the Simulator , they separated from bassist Ryan Bruni. Chad then briefly played bass at concerts until Vernon "Vern" Zaborowski was brought into the band as the new live bassist. Through many tours and the fact that their single 96 Quite Bitter Beings , as well as some other of their songs, could be heard in the TV series Jackass , some major labels became aware of CKY and they were signed to Island Records in 2001 . There Volume 1 was released again worldwide and the band then began to work on their second album.
2002–2004: Infiltrate • Destroy • Rebuild and International Discovery
On September 24, 2002, CKY released their second studio album, Infiltrate • Destroy • Rebuild . In the USA, the album entered the Billboard 200 at number 99 and increased the band's profile, especially outside of America. Flesh Into Gear , which debuted at number 38 on the Billboard Modern Rock charts, and Attached At The Hip were released as singles . After that, CKY toured the USA, Canada and Europe and played among other things as support for Guns N'Roses and Metallica , which CKY had selected as their opening act and even asked them themselves. In 2003, Infiltrate • Destroy • Rebuild: The Video Album , which contained a video and plenty of bonus material for every song on the album, and the EP Hellview . During another tour in 2004, the band decided to split up with bassist Vern due to discrepancies. Chad resumed the role of bass player until the end of this tour, after which she began work on her next studio album.
2005–2007: An Answer Can Be Found and new label
An Answer Can Be Found was published on June 28, 2005 and entered the Billboard 200 in the US at number 35 . The only single on the album was Familiar Realm and was ranked 32nd on the Billboard Modern Rock charts. Shortly after the album was released, it was announced that Matt Deis would join the band as the first full-time bass player.
In 2005 and 2006 the band toured again to promote their album. Furthermore, in 2006 the contractual relationship between CKY and Island Records was terminated by mutual agreement due to differences. CKY then signed a contract with the major label Roadrunner Records and began recording another studio album in 2007. In 2007 the Bootleg Live at Mr. Smalls Funhouse was released, which includes a full concert by the band on CD and DVD. The band liked it so much that they decided to support it and sell it on subsequent tours.
2007–2010: Time out and Carver City
In the fall of 2007, CKY stopped recording their album to play on the Viva La Bands tour sponsored by Jess' brother Bam. There, however, there were violent arguments between the band members and even physical clashes. CKY broke off the tour and stopped working on their new album. There was radio silence between the band members for about a year, during which time they worked with their now-established side projects - Deron with World Under Blood and Jess with The Company Band - and spent time with their families.
In October 2008 the silence was broken and CKY announced that they would be back and finish their new album. She toured and released her fourth studio album, Carver City , on May 19, 2009 . This rose to number 46 on the Billboard 200 and produced the singles Hellions On Parade , A # 1 Roller Rager and ... And She Never Returned . It is also their first album with one of their bassists involved in the recording. After the release, CKY began again with extensive tours through North America, Europe and Australia and even played a few concerts in Japan, where they were additionally supported by keyboardist Matt "Matty J" Janaitis.
2010–2011: Afterworld and B-Sides & Rarities
In spring 2010 it was announced that CKY and bassist Matt Deis will go their separate ways from now on. His successor on bass (also in the studio) was Matt Janaitis, who had previously acted as a live keyboardist, and Robert "Murry" Valeno took over the part of keyboardist at concerts. In the summer of 2010, CKY played at some major festivals such as the Sonisphere Festival in England, and in the fall of that year the band also contributed and released the new song Afterworld , in which Chad is the lead singer for the first time, to the soundtrack of the third Jackass movie this also as a single.
On March 22, 2011 the compilation B-Sides & Rarities , a collection of unreleased and rare songs by CKY, was released on their own label Distant Recordings . A supplement to this compilation was released in the autumn of the same year under the name B-Sides & Rarities 2 . After playing at the download festival in the summer of 2011, the band then took a break, as there was again unrest between the band members and there were disagreements about the future of the band. However, she announced a concert in the USA for December of that year and was confirmed for the Soundwave Festival in Australia in spring 2012.
2011 until today: second break and possible new album
During and after their US concert in December 2011, there were further disagreements between the band members. The singer and guitarist Deron Miller then left CKY because, according to his own statements, he was no longer interested in the band and wanted to devote himself more to his Death Metal side project World Under Blood. For the 2012 planned shows as part of the Soundwave Festival, he was replaced by Daniel Davis. The band then announced that they wanted to continue with Davis and write new songs, but since then nothing has been heard of the band's activities and no further concerts have taken place.
In late 2013, Miller announced that he would return to the band and work on a new album. However, it is not yet known who will be involved in this as disputes persist between the current band line-up.
On May 27, 2016 the band announced via Facebook that Matt Deis was back on the bass, but Miller, Matt "Matty J" Janaitis and Robert "Murry" Valeno had recently left the band. It was also announced that new demos have already been recorded and that the band will record a new album in July 2016 at Rancho De La Luna Studio ( Joshua Tree , California ).
The new studio album The Phoenix was released on June 16, 2017.
On June 3, 2019, bassist Matt Deis announced that he was leaving the band again. Currently the band officially only consists of Chad I Ginsburg and Jess Margera.
Trivia
- In addition to the band CKY, there are also the four videos CKY , CKY2K , CKY3 and CKY4 , most of which were produced by Bam Margera . The main characters of the series thus became the CKY crew and later appeared in the TV series Jackass and its film offshoots : Bam Margera, Ryan Dunn , Brandon DiCamillo , Raab Himself and Rake Yohn . After Jackass, the entire troupe was seen on the TV show Viva La Bam . The various activities in these films and series are often musically accompanied by CKY songs, in some projects of the CKY crew the band members themselves appear briefly.
- Singer and songwriter Deron Miller is a huge fan of horror films, which is reflected in many of the band's songs. He also occasionally plays minor roles in low budget horror films.
- Every CKY album so far has been produced by Chad Ginsburg .
- In the cinema you could hear the song "Flesh Into Gear " in Jackass: The Movie and "Afterworld " in Jackass 3D .
- 96 Quite Bitter Beings was also known on the internet as the “Shopping Cart Song ” because it was played in a scene from the Jackass television series in which Margera and the crew put themselves into shopping carts and drive themselves against curbs and the like Bring falls. Many viewers then wanted to know which piece of the shopping cart scene was playing in the background.
- Bam Margera, his parents Phil and April and the rest of the CKY troupe often attended the band's concerts and occasionally made announcements during these.
- The CKY fan club is called the CKY Alliance and is loyal to the band. The CKY Alliance website has the Ask CKY section , in which the band members have personally answered over 16,000 questions from fans since 2002.
