Giambattista Lollipop

Giambattista Lolli (* 1698 in Nonantola ; † June 4, 1769 ) was an Italian chess player .

Together with Ercole del Rio and Domenico Lorenzo Ponziani , who also came from the area around Modena , he was one of the most important chess theorists of his time. His fame is based on the work Osservazioni teorico-pratiche sopra il giuoco degli scacchi (German: Theoretical-practical considerations on the game of chess) , published in Bologna in 1763 . It contains analysis of openings , especially the Italian game .

In the King's Gambit the (nowadays no longer used) variant is 1. e2 – e4 e7 – e5 2. f2 – f4 e5xf4 3. Ng1 – f3 g7 – g5 4. Bf1 – c4 g5 – g4 ( Muzio gambit ) 5. Bc4xf7 + after Lollipop named. ( Lollipop Gambit )

It illustrates the uncompromising attack-oriented style of the Italian masters, which differs significantly from the style of François-André Danican Philidor , which is characterized by more strategic considerations . The work also contains a hundred endgames . One of these positions was used by Wilhelm Heinse in his novel Anastasia and the game of chess .
