Chazor Ashdod

Khazor Ashdod ( Heb. חָצוֹר אַשְׁדּוֹד) is a kibbutz in the southern district of Israel , but is located in the north-south direction quite centrally and about halfway between the cities of Ashdod and Kirjat Mal'achi ; the distance to the Mediterranean Sea is about ten kilometers as the crow flies.

The kibbutz was named after a biblical location in ancient Judea (Joshua 15:23). The place was named Chazor Ashdod to distinguish it from the Upper Galilean Chazor haGlilit .

history

Front lines at Khazor Ashdod (July 16-17, 1948).

The kibbutz - understood as a group - was founded in 1936 under the umbrella of the HaSchomer HaTzair youth movement . The members settled in Mishmar HaEmek for a year , then moved to Rishon LeTzion , where they initially stayed for another nine years. The restrictions on Jewish settlement in what was then Palestine, which were laid down in the British White Paper of 1939 , left no space available that would have been suitable for a new Jewish settlement. During this period, Bulgarian and North American youth groups from HaSchomer HaTzair joined the already existing group.

In 1943 some members of the kibbutz founded the settlement Mizpe Gwulot (מִצְפֶּה גְּבוּלוֹת); this settlement, along with two similar settlements - Mizphe Revivim (ähnlichenה רְבִיבִים) and Mizpe Bet Eschel (מִצְפֶּה בֵּית אֵשֶׁל) - was one of the first Jewish settlements in the Negev desert . However, as the remote location was deemed unsuitable for a permanent settlement with 100 members and dozens of children, the search for a suitable location continued. On June 17, 1946, the members of the kibbutz finally settled at the present day settlement, in the vicinity of four Arab villages and a British air base , today the Israeli military air base Chazor (בָּסִיס חֵיל-הַאֲוִויר חָצוֹר).

In the war of independence from the end of May to October 1948, the front line was near the town. The Egyptian army advanced as far as the city of Ashdod ; Khazor Ashdod also came under artillery fire . The children and the animal population were evacuated until the Egyptian army withdrew; those who remained lived in trenches . The Arab villages in the neighborhood were abandoned by the residents during the war and the population fled to the Gaza Strip . After the war, the land of the Arab villages was confiscated by the Israeli state and leased to the kibbutz.

In the 1950s, a group of HaSchomer HaTzair (השומר הצעיר) from France joined the kibbutz. By the 1970s, the kibbutz had around 300 members and the total number of residents was around 600. In 2018, the kibbutz had 624 residents.

Like other kibbutzim that had been founded by members of the HaSchomer HaTzair , Khazor Ashdod was affiliated to the kibbutz association HaKibbutz HaArtzi (הקיבוץ הארצי).
