The Chazor military airfield ( ICAO code: LLHS for Israel Air Force Base Hatzor ) is a base of the Israeli Air Force (IAF) . It is located in the middle of Israel about 10 km east of the Mediterranean Sea , near the kibbutz Khazor Ashdod , from which the military airfield takes its name. It has three runways, each almost 2.5 km in length.

history

In 1942 the military airfield was laid out by the Royal Air Force (RAF) under the British mandate over Palestine as RAF base Qastina and in 1948, after the withdrawal of the British, it was taken over by the Hagana and renamed.

On the night of February 25, 1946, Irgun underground fighters attacked the RAF base and destroyed several of the Handley Page Halifax transport planes parked there . Two other RAF bases were also attacked that night, later called The Night of the Aircraft . A total of 20 aircraft were destroyed and several damaged, so that the RAF was forced to move many of their planes to bases in Egypt.

On the morning of August 16, 1966, an Iraqi MiG-21 landed in Chazor (see gallery), the highlight of Operation Diamond . Munir Redfa, an Iraqi fighter pilot, had been persuaded by the Mossad to fly the top product of Soviet aircraft technology to Israel.

The "First Fighter" squadron was founded in May 1948 as the first military aircraft squadron in Israel - at that time still with Messerschmitt fighter planes , imported from Czechoslovakia . She has been flying the F-16C / D since the 1980s and has been involved in numerous missions since its inception.

The "Scorpion" squadron was founded in 1950 and first flew the English Spitfire , later the American Mustang . She was also involved in numerous missions. In the early 1990s she received the F-16C / D.

Current

An aircraft squadron was introduced on Chazor in 2010 that will never take off from the ground. A network of eight simulators uses 3D satellite images so that fighter pilots can realistically and safely practice operations over enemy territory and evasive action in the event of fire with surface-to-air missiles.

On April 2, 2017, the first two batteries of the new David's Sling missile defense system were installed at the base . Not far from the Gaza Strip , they are primarily used to intercept rockets fired by Hamas and Islamic Jihad . The system was jointly developed by Rafael ( Israel ) and Raytheon ( USA ).
