The Ramon Military Airfield ( ICAO Code: LLRM for Israeli Air Force Base Ramon ) is a base of the Israeli Air Force (IAF) . It is located in the southern district of Israel in the Negev desert, northwest of the town of Mitzpe Ramon, around 17 km from the Egyptian border. It has two runways of 2,700 and 3,010 m in length.
history
The military airfield was built between 1979 and 1982 together with the airfields Nevatim and Ovda by US companies as a replacement for the bases Eitam, Etzion, Ofira and Refidim on the Sinai Peninsula , which were abandoned after the Camp David Agreement (see gallery). In January 2005, the "Bat" squadron on Ramon was the first to fly the new F-16I jet, which was adapted to Israeli needs . Shortly afterwards, the squadrons “Negev” and “One” were also equipped with F-16I jets.
Current
Currently (2020), in addition to the three F-16 squadrons, there are also two AH-64A / D Apache attack helicopters stationed at the military airfield , the only ones in Israel. For several years there have been considerations to purchase new Apache attack helicopters of the type AH-64E from the US manufacturer Boeing , but this has so far failed because of the costs.
