It was later taken over by the Israeli Air Force (IAF) . Cyprus Airways started its first regular flights in 1948, followed by Arkia in 1958. Israir from 1996, Aeroel since 1998. This was followed by Royal Wings (Jordan) and Scorpio (Egypt) as further companies in flight operations. With the expansion of the airport in 1998, air traffic increased. In 2001 the Israeli minister Silvan Shalom announced that the airport would be expanded again and the runway would be 2,400 meters long. On July 24, 2012, the tasks of flight operations were handed over from the Israeli Air Force to civilian operators, who are to expand operations in the future.
