Cannoli siciliani with candied fruits

Cannolo (plural: cannoli) is a filled pastry from Sicily . It consists of a deep-fried rolling pin with a sweet, creamy ricotta filling , which can contain vanilla , cocoa , chocolate chips or candied fruit.

Cannoli were originally one of several lard pastries , in the Shrovetide were eaten throughout the year but are now made over. Today they are offered by major bakeries and restaurants all over Italy.

The Italian word cannolo literally means “small pipe” and does not refer to the piece of dough, but to the pipe around which the dough pieces are traditionally wrapped for deep-frying, usually cut stake pipes about 15 cm long.
