The 1st European Youth Athletics Championships took place from July 14th to 17th, 2016 in the Georgian capital Tbilisi .

On May 3, 2014, at a meeting in Frankfurt am Main , the European Athletic Association (EAA) chose Tbilisi as the host of the European Youth Championships. Tbilisi prevailed against the Italian city ​​of Rieti with its application .

The German Athletics Association (DLV) nominated 49 young athletes, 26 athletes and 23 athletes, with nine of the young talents being among the top three of the European U18 best list and a large part of the team at the first German U16 championships in 2014 in Cologne was successful. The DLV team won ten medals and took first place in the nation ranking.
