Jan Raphael (born January 18, 1980 in Hanover ) is a former German triathlete who is now active as a coach. He is Ironman winner (2006, 2012), was second twice at the Ironman European Championship (2011, 2013) and he is German champion in the long distance triathlon (2017). Raphael is included in the best list of German triathletes on the Ironman distance .

Career

Jan Raphael has been running triathlons since 1994 and was part of the German national triathlon team.

German U23 triathlon champion 2000

In 2000 and 2003 he was German triathlon champion U23 at the Olympic distance. From 2001 to 2006 he was team champion in the German Triathlon League (2001 to 2003 with the Hansgrohe Team Schramberg and from 2004 to 2006 with the Hansgrohe Black Forest team ).

In November 2006 he won the Ironman Florida in his first start on the long distance . He has been a professional triathlete since 2006. From 2006 until its dissolution in 2011, he was a member of the Commerzbank Triathlon Team . He then started together with Timo Bracht , Horst Reichel and Georg Potrebitsch for the 21run.com Triathlon Team , which became the Power Horse Triathlon Team in 2013 and the Sport for Good Team in 2015 .
In 2016, Rafael announced that he would leave the team and go his own way.

Second Ironman European Championship 2011

In 2011 and 2013 he finished second at the Ironman European Championship in Frankfurt . At the first Ironman Sweden held in August 2012, he won his second gold medal in the long distance.

In August 2016 he won the Challenge Regensburg at the first edition and a month later the Challenge race in Almere on the long distance .

German champion triathlon long distance 2017

At the Challenge Regensburg in August, he was able to successfully defend his victory from the previous year and the then 37-year-old became German champion in the long-distance triathlon.

His wife Rebekka was occasionally seen in the field of professional women. The qualified translator works at a school in Hanover and teaches Spanish and English there. The two live in Hemmingen (Lower Saxony) .

Jan Raphael finished his active time at the Maschsee Triathlon in Hanover in September 2018 after 15 years as a professional athlete and announced that he would work as a triathlon coach in the future.
