Bonn is one of the four districts of the eponymous federal city of Bonn with 153,803 inhabitants (December 31, 2018). It was created as part of the municipal reform on August 1, 1969 and essentially covers the area of the previous city of Bonn, which was expanded to include the places Ippendorf , Röttgen , Lessenich and Buschdorf . These expansions gave the city district a peculiar shape; thus the city district of Hardtberg is enclosed on three sides by Bonn.
Informally it is heard that this was a condition for the consent of the city of Bonn to the municipal reorganization, because the city district of Bonn has more inhabitants than the city districts of Bad Godesberg and Beuel combined. Because the number of inhabitants is reflected in the composition of numerous committees, this is of great importance for the inner-city balance of power.
