Via the stations Mülheimer SV 06 and SC Rapid Köln - with Rapid he had taken 6th place in the II. Division 1949/50 - the 20-year-old all-round player came to Prussia Dellbrück in the Oberliga West in the summer of 1950. On the first day of the round 1950/51, August 27, 1950, he made his debut in the away game against Fortuna Dusseldorf in the league. In the 1-1 draw, he played right outside runner and Fritz Herkenrath guarded the gate of the cult club from the Dellbrück district of Cologne on the right bank of the Rhine. In his third season with the black and whites from Bergisch-Gladbacher-Straße, 1952/53, he was a right-wing half-forward of the Prussian team, which on March 8, 1953 in front of 38,000 spectators, a 1-0 home win against the later Runner-up 1. FC Cologne succeeded. The round ended Dörner with 28 league games, where he was the top scorer for Dellbrück with twelve goals, and joined 1. FC Cologne for the 1953/54 season. From 1950 to 1953 he had played a total of 81 league games for Dellbrück and scored 31 goals.

In his first season with FC, 1953/54, the newcomer played all 30 league games and scored 15 goals for the team of coach Karl Winkler and President Franz Kremer . This made him the second best scorer in the billy goat eleven behind Hans Schäfer (26). 1. FC Köln became champions of the Oberliga West and Dörner took part in the final round of the German championship with the club . There he was in the time-reduced mode due to the World Cup in Switzerland in the two games against Eintracht Frankfurt and 1. FC Kaiserslautern, each as a left connector next to left winger Schäfer. In 1954 he was also in the DFB Cup final with FC , which was lost 1-0 to VfB Stuttgart . Dörner missed a penalty. The trained baker and confectioner played for six years in the rounds from 1953/54 to 1958/59 at 1. FC Köln. Due to his versatility, he played under the coaches Kurt Baluses (1954/55), Hennes Weisweiler (1955/56 to 1957/58) and Peter Szabo (1958/59) in defense, as well as in midfield and attack. The runner-up in 1958 and 1959 was followed by further finals . In his third final round in 1959, he played in all six games against FK Pirmasens, Werder Bremen and Eintracht Frankfurt. His teammates were now Fritz Ewert in goal, Karl-Heinz Schnellinger as a partner in defense, Hans Sturm , Leo Wilden , Fritz Breuer and Günter Mühlenbock in the runner row, as well as the strikers Franz Brungs , Josef Röhrig , Hans Pfeiffer , Hans Schäfer, Dieter Jost and Helmut Fendel . Overall, he completed 162 league games for the “billy goat” team from 1953 to 1959 in the Oberliga West, scoring 34 goals. After the round in 1958/59 he joined the Bonn FV in the summer of 1959 .

The black and whites from Sportpark Gronau had returned to the 2nd League West in 1958/59 and thus the ex-national player played again in the second division of the DFB's league system at the end of his higher-class career. At the end of his debut round in 1959/60 , Dörner surprisingly took fourth place with the BFV and there was speculation in Bonn about an imminent promotion to the Oberliga West. Although there was a gap to the three best-placed teams in the back series, fourth place for the BFV in the 1959/60 season was probably the greatest success in the club's history. With increased ambitions, the club went into the next season with Dörner and his teammates. With the tenth place in 1960/61 these expectations could not be met. A highlight of this season, however, was a trip to Africa by the club at the turn of 1960/61, for which the Bonn FV played in Cameroon and Togo as part of a development program of the Foreign Office.

After completing his active career in the summer of 1963, Dörner first ran a restaurant in Bonn, later switched to a representative and also worked as a coach for some lower-class amateur clubs.

Selection appointments

National coach Herberger tested Dörner for the first time on February 22, 1956 in a training match between the national team and Hamburger SV. Together with Hermann Nuber and Robert Schlienz, he formed the runner-up of the DFB selection, which won 4-1 goals. In the first year of coaching under Hennes Weisweiler at 1. FC Köln, there were two international matches in the B national team against the Netherlands and Spain on April 21 and May 31 . The impressive performance in the 5-2 success in Barcelona against Spain by the runners Dörner, Heinz Wewers and Gerd Harpers paid off with the appointment 14 days later to the senior national team. On June 13, 1956, the Cologne debut in the national team in a 3-1 win in Oslo against Norway. Together with Wewers and Karl Mai he formed the German runner series. In addition to captain Alfred Pfaff , goalkeeper Günter Sawitzki and the two wingers Erich Bäumler and Theo Schönhöft made their first international appearances. Again 14 days later, Dörner completed his second A international match against Sweden on June 30 in Stockholm. At 2-2, Horst Eckel was his fellow outside runner. At the beginning of the 1956/57 season, the Cologne player played three test matches with the DFB selection against club teams in August. But only on September 15, 1956 in Moscow at the B international match against the Soviet Union was an official assignment in the ranks of the DFB. After three games in the B-Elf and two in the senior national team, all in 1956, the appointments by the DFB ended.

In October and November 1958, Dörner played two more international games against the eventual finalists Birmingham City in the Messestädte-Pokal with Cologne's city selection .
