The II. Division 1949/50 was the first season of the II. Division , which formed the second highest division in football in parts of Germany between 1949 and 1963. In the 1949/50 season there was a double-track II Division in West Germany . Southern Germany introduced the division in 1950, and southwest Germany in 1951. The 2nd Division was not introduced in northern Germany and West Berlin . Here the amateur league was the second highest division.

The championship was secured by the Rheydter Spielverein and Sportfreunde Katernberg . A final between the two group winners did not take place. In addition to Rheydt and Katernberg, Fortuna Düsseldorf and Borussia Munich-Gladbach rose to the top division. Arminia Bielefeld , Duisburg FV 08 , TSG Vohwinkel 80 and Rhenania Würselen got off the league .

With the Bonn FV 01 and the SSV Troisdorf 05 there were only two athletic relegations. The VfB Bottrop , TuRa 1886 Essen , Alemannia Gelsenkirchen , the SpVgg Röhlinghausen and VfL Witten dressed the same five teams their team voluntarily. Viktoria Alsdorf's license was revoked due to deficiencies in the bookkeeping . VfB 03 Bielefeld , TSV Detmold , SG Düren 99 , TuS Essen-West , SSV Hagen , SC Fortuna Cologne , VfL Cologne 1899 and SV Sodingen rose from the national leagues .

The TB Eickel merged with Preußen Wanne to form the Sportfreunde Wanne-Eickel . The Gelsenkirchen clubs Alemannia and Union merged to form Eintracht Gelsenkirchen .
