The II. Division 1956/57 was the eighth season of the II. Division , which formed the second highest division in football in parts of Germany between 1949 and 1963. In the 1956/57 season there was a single-track II Division in west , south-west and south Germany . The 2nd Division was not introduced in northern Germany and West Berlin . Here the amateur league was the second highest division.
west
Hamborn 07 and Rot-Weiß Oberhausen rose to the Oberliga West. Black and White Essen and Borussia Munich-Gladbach were relegated from the league . The SpVgg Erkenschwick and VfB Speldorf had relegated to the Verbandsliga and through were VfL Benrath and sports fans Gladbeck replaced.

Promotion round west
The champions of the three West German associations took part in the promotion round. Since both the SpVg Beckum and the Stolberger SV renounced the promotion, the Westphalian runner-up, Sportfreunde Gladbeck, moved up.

The SV St. Ingbert and TuRa Ludwigshafen rose to the Oberliga Südwest. Spvgg Andernach and Sportfreunde Saarbrücken were relegated from the Oberliga Südwest . The Ludwigshafen SC , which until May 11, 1957 yet ASV Hochfeld called, and the sports fans Herdorf had to dismount in the amateur league and were by the FC 08 Homburg and Germania Metternich replaced.

The champions of the three south-west German amateur leagues and the south-west German cup winner SC Altenkessel took part in the promotion round . The round was also the final round of the southwest German amateur championship, in which the games with Altenkessel participation were not counted.

The TSV 1860 München and SSV Reutlingen 05 rose in the Oberliga Süd. TSV Schwaben Augsburg and Freiburg FC were relegated from the league . The Karlsruher FV and the VfR Heilbronn had to relegate to the amateur league and were replaced by Borussia Fulda and TSV Amicitia Viernheim .

The champions of the five southern German amateur leagues took part in the promotion round. Behind the winner of the promotion round Amicitia Viernheim, Borussia Fulda and VfB Friedrichshafen were tied. The decisive game in Pforzheim was decided by Fulda 1-0.
