societies

As the goalkeeper of TuRU Düsseldorf , the 20-year-old talent attracted attention in the Niederrhein Association League. On May 26, 1957, the national trainer Sepp Herberger appointed the amateur player with great jumping ability for the international match of the U23 junior team in Bayreuth against Czechoslovakia. In the 1-1 draw, he formed the final triangle of the German team with the defenders Herbert Dienelt and Hermann Höfer . On June 20 and 26, there were two test matches in DFB teams in Schweinfurt and Berlin. For the 1957/58 season he moved to the football Oberliga West for 1. FC Cologne .

Coach Hennes Weisweiler started with the newcomer from Düsseldorf on August 11, 1957 in the 1957/58 league season. The "billy goat-Elf" won 4-2 goals at Fortuna Düsseldorf. In the course of the round, however, the former goalkeeper Günther Klemm prevailed again and Ewert made nine appearances in his first league season. Cologne was runner-up and moved into the final round of the German championship, but Ewert had to be content with the substitute bench. In the second orienteering year, 1958/59, Ewert won number one at 1. FC Köln, was runner-up with the team of new coach Peter Szabo and played all six games in the final round. His first final round game was a 0: 4 defeat on May 16, 1959 in Ludwigshafen against the Southwest representative FK Pirmasens . In the 1959/60 season, President Franz Kremer's team celebrated the Western Championship - Ewert had played all 30 rounds - and, with coach Oswald Pfau, also reached the final on June 25, 1960 in Frankfurt against Hamburger SV . With the defensive line-up Ewert in goal, the defender couple Georg Stollenwerk and Karl-Heinz Schnellinger as well as the runner row with Josef Röhrig , Leo Wilden and Hans Sturm , the final was lost with 2: 3 goals. From 1960 to 1963 Fritz Ewert celebrated the championship four times with 1. FC Köln in the Oberliga West, made three appearances in the German final, became German champion in 1962 and played a total of 28 final round matches. In the Oberliga West he played 130 league games from 1957 to 1963.

In the European Cup, the tall goalkeeper had already gained experience in the trade fair cup in three games in the Cologne city selection in the rounds from 1958/59 to 1960/61 and in three games for 1. FC Köln in the 1961/62 season. As a sovereign champion, Cologne was the favorite in the national championship competition on September 5, 1962 in the first leg at the Scottish champions FC Dundee . It was a disgrace, with 1: 8 lost the team of coach Cajkovski. As early as the 4th minute, keeper Ewert was injured after an aerial duel with a Scotsman, so he initially continued to play in a daze, but had to be replaced by field player Anton Regh in the second half , as there was no substitution at this stage.

With the game year 1963/64 the single-track soccer Bundesliga started . The four-time series champions of the Oberliga West, 1. FC Köln, lived up to their role as favorites with the new coach Georg Knöpfle and won the first championship trophy in the Bundesliga. The goalkeeper belongs to the group of players who got the league up and running as an active player on the day the Bundesliga started, on August 24, 1963. Cologne won 2-0 goals at 1. FC Saarbrücken and before Ewert the defenders Fritz Pott and Anton Regh played and the defensive was completed by the runner row with Helmut Benthaus , Leo Wilden and Hans Sturm . Ewert was a security support in goal in 26 games and was represented by Toni Schumacher in the four remaining games . He brought an outstanding performance on the 13th matchday, November 30, 1963, when the table leaders Cologne had to compete with two points ahead of the pursuers Borussia Dortmund. In the Bundesliga chronicle 1963/64, Cologne's 3-2 success is noted:

“However, Cologne had curled up around the penalty area and defended extremely skillfully. In addition, Ewert was a man with great reflexes and "a thousand hands" in the box. The goalkeeper even punched a penalty from Emmerich from the danger zone (73rd). The leader of the table survived the hosts' barrage in an exciting top game. "

In the first year of the Bundesliga he was a regular goalkeeper of FC, but in the following season, 1964/65, he lost his place to Toni Schumacher . He was also in goal in the second round of the European Cup against Panathinaikos Athens in November 1964, but Toni Schumacher guarded the Cologne goal in the three legendary quarter-finals against Liverpool in February / March 1965. In his last season in Cologne, 1965/66, he only made twelve Bundesliga appearances. He played his last competitive game on April 30, 1966 in the 3-2 away defeat against Borussia Dortmund. From 1963 to 1966, Ewert played 45 Bundesliga games. In the European Cup he was in 12 games in the Kölner Tor. When in 1966 a Yugoslav national goalkeeper was committed with Milutin Šoškić , Ewert moved to the Netherlands for AZ Alkmaar . He had played a total of 230 competitive games for Cologne. Ewert only played one season in Alkmaar. In 1967 he returned to TuRU Düsseldorf. In 1973 he still played for SpVg Frechen .
