Sir Mark Stanhope , GCB , OBE , DL (* 26. March 1952 in Hammersmith , London ) is a former British Admiral of the Royal Navy , among other things, from 2004 deputy until 2007 Supreme Commander of the Allied Transformation Command of NATO ( Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Transformation ) , between 2007 and 2009 Commander in Chief of the Fleet and most recently from 2009 to 2013 First Sea Lord and Chief of the Naval Staff.

Life

Naval officer and ship commander

Captain Mark Stanhope was between July 1991 and December 1992 commander of HMS London , a frigate of Broadsword-class .
Stanhope was also the commander of the aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious from 1998 to 2000 .

Mark Stanhope, son of Frederick William Stanhope and his wife Shiela Mary Hattemore, graduated from Worthing High School for Boys and the London Nautical School and joined the Royal Navy in 1970 . A study physics at St Peter's College of the University of Oxford closed it with a Master of Arts (MA Physics) from. This was followed by numerous posts as a naval officer and staff officer in the Navy. On December 31, 1989 he was awarded the Officer's Cross of the Order of the British Empire (OBE). He has worked as the Captain (Captain) between July 1991 and December 1992 commander of HMS London , a frigate of Broadsword-class . After other assignments, he was in command of the aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious from September 1998 to May 2000 .

After that was Stanhope as Rear Admiral (Rear Admiral) from May 2000 to July 2002 Director of operational management at the headquarters of NATO -Regionalkommandos of the Allied Forces in Northern Europe RC AFNORTH ( Regional Command Allied Forces North Europe ) . Promotion to Admiral and First Sea Lord

Subsequently assumed Admiral Mark Stanhope in July 2004 by Admiral Ian Forbes the post of deputy supreme commander of the Allied Transformation Command ( Allied Command Transformation ) NATO ( Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Transformation ) and had that held until July 2007, after Admiral Luciano Zappata by the Italian Marina Militare succeeded him there. He then replaced Admiral James Burnell-Nugent as Commander-in-Chief, The Fleet in November 2007 and held this position until he was replaced by Admiral Trevor Soar in June 2009.

Last Admiral Stanhope was in July 2009. succeed Admiral Jonathon band, namely this time as First Sea Lord (First Sea Lord) . He served in that role until his retirement from active military service in April 2013 at the same time Chief of Naval Staff (Chief of the Naval Staff) . In April 2013, Admiral George Zambellas succeeded him in these offices. On June 12, 2013 he was raised to the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath (GCB).

Mark Stanhope was Deputy Lieutenant of the County of Devon and is also an honorary citizen ( Freeman of the City ) of the City of London . He was also active as President of the Marine Society & Sea Cadets , as a so-called Younger Brother in the Trinity House beacon administration and as Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Upholders , the upholsterers' guild.

His marriage to Janet Anne Flynn in 1975 had a daughter.
