Admiral George Zambellas

Sir George Michael Zambellas , GCB , DSC , DL , FRAeS (born April 4, 1958 in Swansea , Wales ) is a former British admiral in the Royal Navy , who among other things was Commander in Chief of the Fleet in 2012, and from 2012 to 2013 Commander of the Allied Naval Command of NATO and between 2013 and 2016 was First Sea Lord and Chief of Naval Staff.

Life

Naval officer and ship commander

Captain George Zambellas was from August 1999 to January 2001 as commander of HMS Chatham , a frigate of Broadsword-class .

George Michael Zambellas, son of Michael George Zambellas from Greece and his Rosemary Frederique Lindsay, completed his education at the Shabani Primary School in Shabani in Southern Rhodesia and at the Stowe School . He studied aerospace engineering at the University of Southampton in 1980 with a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc. Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering). He then joined the Royal Navy in 1980 . After that followed numerous uses as a naval officer and staff officer in the Navy as including as captain from August 1999 to January 2001 as commander of HMS Chatham , a frigate of Broadsword-class . On April 6, 2001 he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross (DSC). As Commodore he was between January 2001 and November 2002, first deputy head of the naval training (Deputy Flag Officer, Sea Training) and after November 2002 to December 2004 First Staff Officer to the Chief of the Defense Staff ( Chief of the Defense Staff ) , Admiral Michael Boyce , respectively from May 2003 by his successor General Michael Walker .

Then Commodore Zambellas took over the function as Commodore of the Amphibious Task Group (Commodore, Amphibious Task Group) between January 2005 and August 2006 , before he succeeded Rear-Admiral Neil Morisetti as Commander of the Naval Task Force after another assignment in June 2007 as Rear Admiral of the United Kingdom (Commander, United Kingdom Maritime Forces) . He stayed in this post until September 2008 and was then replaced by Rear Admiral Philip Andrew Jones . He himself then acted between October 2009 and November 2010 as Deputy Chief of Joint Operations at the Permanent Joint Headquarters (Deputy Chief, Joint Operations, Permanent Joint Headquarters) in Northwood. He was then Vice-Admiral and held as successor to Vice-Admiral Richard Ibbotson from January 2011 to his but repeated replacement by Vice-Admiral Philip Andrew Jones in December 2011, the post of deputy commander of the fleet (Deputy Commander, The Fleet) .

Promotion to Admiral and First Sea Lord

Subsequently, Admiral George Michael Zambellas replaced Trevor Soar as Commander-in-Chief, The Fleet in January 2012 and held this position until he was replaced by Admiral Philip Andrew Jones in November 2012. At the same time, he took over in personal union in April 2012 also the re-established function as Deputy Chief of the Naval Staff . For his services he was beaten during this time on June 16, 2012 to Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (KCB) and from then on carried the suffix "Sir". On December 1, 2012 he became the first commander of the Allied Naval Command AMC Allied Maritime Command of NATO and held this position until his replacement by Admiral Peter Hudson on February 14, 2013.

Last Admiral Zambellas was 2013 successor to Admiral in April Mark Stanhope as First Sea Lord (First Sea Lord) . He served in that role until his retirement from active military service in April 2016 at the same time Chief of Naval Staff (Chief of the Naval Staff) . In April 2016, Admiral Philip Andrew Jones succeeded him in these offices for the fourth time. On December 31, 2015, he was elevated to the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath (GCB).

He was also involved as a so-called Younger Brother in the Trinity House beacon management and as Honorary Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Merchant Taylors , the tailors' guild. In 2009 he became a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society (FRAeS) and, in September 2013, Deputy Lieutenant (DL) of the county of Dorset .

His marriage to Amanda Jane LeCudennec in 1982 resulted in three sons.
