The Allied Maritime Command , briefly MARCOM is a NATO - command authority for conducting naval forces . Its headquarters are in Northwood in the London Borough of Hillingdon , Great Britain and within the NATO command structure it is subordinate to the Allied Command Operations (ACO) in the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) in Mons, Belgium.
history
The command of the Allied naval forces was reorganized in 2012 and goes back to the previous command structure in Northwood, the Eastern Atlantic Area (EASTLANT) under the leadership of the Commander-in-Chief Eastern Atlantic (CINCEASTLANT) from 1952 to 2004. It was subordinate to the Supreme Allied Commander Atlantic (SACLANT).
This was followed by a transformation to Command Component Maritime Northwood (CC-MAR Northwood) and existed from 2004 to March 2010 and then from 2010 to 2012 as Allied Maritime Command Northwood (MC Northwood) and was subordinate to the Allied Joint Force Command Brunssum (JFC Brunssum).
In June 2011, the NATO defense ministers again adjusted the NATO command structure as part of a new Alliance Maritime Strategy (AMS) and, from December 1, 2012, transformed the previous Allied Maritime Command Northwood (MC Northwood) into Allied Maritime Command , or MARCOM for short , detached from JFC Brunssum and reports directly to Allied Command Operations (ACO) on an operational level .
MARCOM is also involved in the NATO operations Ocean Shield to combat piracy off the Somali coast and Active Endeavor to detect and deter terrorist activities in the Mediterranean region.
