Operation Ocean Shield

The Operation Ocean Shield is since August 2009 conducted NATO -Marinemission to combat piracy in the Gulf of Aden .

background

From October to December 2008, NATO and the Standing NATO Maritime Group 2 (SNMG 2) carried out Operation Allied Provider to protect the sea routes in the Horn of Africa . Operation Allied Protector followed from March to June 2009 with the Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 (SNMG 1) with the same objective.

In preparation for the follow-up operation, the possibility of Russian units participating in Operation Ocean Shield was also discussed at times.

As of June 30, 2009, the SNMG 2 replaced the forces on site, the designation Operation Allied Protector was initially retained, contrary to planning.

On August 17, 2009, the North Atlantic Council approved a mission called Operation Ocean Shield.

In addition to deploying armed forces at sea, the mission of the operation is also to support the countries bordering the affected sea area in developing their own capabilities to combat piracy .

The mission is managed at the operational level by the Allied Joint Command Lisbon in Lisbon , Portugal , and at the tactical level by the Maritime Component Command Headquarters Northwood , United Kingdom .

Forces involved

The forces used are provided by the SNMG1 and SNMG2. These are three or four frigates or destroyers from NATO member states. The ships involved will be replaced after a few months in the operational area. The two-month deployment of the Dutch submarine Zeeleeuw off the Somali coast to investigate the pirates' bases was only announced after the end of the mission in November 2010.

The ships are partially supplemented by reconnaissance aircraft.
