Operation Allied Protector

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Operation Allied Protector was a multinational naval mission of NATO to protect merchant vessels against pirate attacks on the Horn of Africa . It was carried out from March to August 2009.

Course of operation

NATO already ran from October to December 2008 with forces of the Standing NATO Maritime Group 2 , the Operation Allied Provider by that after the start of the EU operation Atalanta has ended.

The Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 (SNMG 1) was supposed to call at various ports in the northern Indian Ocean and in Southeast Asia , including Singapore and Perth in Australia, from March to July 2009 as part of Operation Pearl . Initially, it was planned to provide temporary support in the fight against piracy in March / April and June. At the NATO summit in Strasbourg on April 3 and 4, 2009, the NATO Council decided to step up action against pirates and to use the SNMG 1 for this purpose. Therefore, contrary to the original plan, after visiting the port in Karachi , Pakistan, the association was immediately sent to the Horn of Africa instead of the Southeast Asian waters.

The ships of the SNMG 1 took part in the protection of shipping off the coast of Africa from March 24, 2009 after crossing the Suez Canal . The first mission took place on March 28, when the helicopter of the USS Halyburton came to the aid of a Maldivian-flagged yacht that had come under fire. Since then, SNMG 1 has actively suppressed several attacks, carried out boarding operations, supported the Yemeni coast guard and escorted several ships.

On June 29, 2009 the SNMG 2 took over the tasks of the SNMG 1, on August 17, 2009 the successor Operation Ocean Shield began .
