HMCS
HMCS is the abbreviation for Her Majesty's Canadian Ship and the prefix for the Canadian naval units . Should the queen be followed by a king, it changes to His Majesty's Canadian Ship . In French, the name Navire canadien de Sa Majesté (NCSM) does not change in the event of a change of sex on the throne. Many of the major Canadian naval bases also carry this abbreviation, such as HMCS Discovery, a base of the Canadian Forces Naval Reserve , the naval reserve.
The abbreviation is derived from the British Her Majesty's Ship ( HMS ) , as the monarch of the United Kingdom is also the head of state of Canada .
The HMCS Rainbow , which the Canadian Navy acquired from the British Royal Navy in 1910 , was the first ship to bear this abbreviation. Ships that currently bear this name are subject to the Canadian Forces Maritime Command , the Canadian Navy.
Many other naval forces from Commonwealth countries carry modifications of the "HMS" , such as the Australian HMAS (Her Majesty's Australian Ship) or the New Zealand HMNZS (Her Majesty's New Zealand Ship).
