HMAS
HMAS is the abbreviation for Her Majesty's Australian Ship and the prefix for the Australian naval units . Should the queen be followed by a king, it changes to His Majesty's Australian Ship . Many of the major Australian naval bases also bear this abbreviation, such as HMAS Stirling , a base of the Royal Australian Navy on the west coast of Australia near the city of Perth .
The abbreviation is derived from the British Her Majesty's Ship ( HMS ) , as the monarch of Great Britain is also the monarch of Australia .
Ships that currently have this name are subordinate to the Royal Australian Navy. In 1911, King George V issued the resolution that ships would have to wear this prefix from now on.
Many other naval forces from Commonwealth countries carry modifications of the "HMS" , such as the Canadian HMCS (Her Majesty's Canadian Ship) or the New Zealand HMNZS (Her Majesty's New Zealand Ship).
