The Kortenaer- class was a frigate class of the Royal Netherlands Navy . The ships were sold to Greece and the United Arab Emirates after the end of their almost thirty years' service with the Dutch Navy .

history

The frigates were designed as universal ships in the 1970s to be able to respond to threats from aircraft as well as submarines and warships . Like most frigate designs of their time, they had a COGOG (Combined gas or gas) propulsion system.

The eight ships of the class F122 of the German Navy , which were built at the same time, come from the same design and are very similar to the Kortenaer class.

A total of ten ships were built by Royal Schelde in Vlissingen and two more by Wilton-Fijenoord in Rotterdam between 1975 and 1982. Two of them were already sold to the Greek Navy as Elli -classes during the construction phase and replaced in the Netherlands by two new Jacob-van-Heemskerck -class ships with better air defense capabilities.

Between 1993 and 1997 four more ships that had been decommissioned by the Dutch Navy were sold to Greece, and in 1997 and 1998 two decommissioned frigates were sold to the United Arab Emirates. The last four ships in the class also went to Greece after being decommissioned in the Netherlands between 2001 and 2004.

It is named after the 17th century admiral Egbert Kortenaer .

technology

The Kortena class frigates are 130 meters long, 14.5 meters wide and displace a maximum of 3800 ts with a draft of 4.4 meters . The drive of the vessels carried by a COGOG system, two Rolls-Royce Tyne RM1C gas turbines , each with 4,900 PS are at cruising speed to 20 knots used speed, two Rolls-Royce Olympus TM3B gas turbines each with 25,700 PS bring the vessels to its maximum speed of 30 Node. The range is 4700 nautical miles at 16 knots cruising speed.

The armament consists of a Oto Melara 76-mm compact gun on the front deck and a Goalkeeper - close-in weapon system on the hangar roof, which in the sold to Greece vessels by Phalanx CIWS was replaced. For the anti-ship use the frigates are equipped with two quad starter for RGM-84 Harpoon - anti-ship missiles . For use against air targets there is a Mk 29 eight - fold launcher for RIM-7 Sea Sparrow anti-aircraft missiles in front of the bridge . Four torpedo tubes for Mark 46 lightweight torpedoes complete the armament.

In the hangar on the aft deck, two Westland Sea Lynx - helicopters are carried, however, is in the peace mission just a helicopter on board.

An LW 08 Long Range Air Surveillance Radar and a WM25 search and tracking radar supply the data for the SEWACO II EDP system with Link 11 data connection and satellite communication . A scout navigation radar supports the navigation of the ship. A Westinghouse AN / SQS-509 bow sonar enables the location of underwater targets.
