The Jacob van Heemskerck class was a class of frigates built for the Royal Netherlands Navy .

history

The frigates were developed in the 1970s as anti-aircraft ships based on the Kortenaer class in order to be able to react particularly to threats from aircraft . The experiences of the Falklands War also played a role. Like most frigate designs of their time, the ships have a COGOG (Combined gas or gas) propulsion system.

A total of two ships were built by Royal Schelde in Vlissingen between 1981 and 1986 .

After 19 years of service with the Dutch Navy, the ships were sold to Chile in 2005 .

technology

The Jacob van Heemskerck class frigates are 130 meters long, 14.5 meters wide and displace a maximum of 3800 tons with a draft of 4.4 meters .

The ships are propelled by a COGOG system. Two Rolls-Royce Tyne RM1C gas turbines , each with 4,900 hp be at cruising speed to 20 knots used speed, two Rolls-Royce Olympus TM3B gas turbines, each with 25,700 hp bring the ships to their top speed of 30 knots. The range is 4700 nautical miles at 16 knots cruising speed.

The pipe-armament consists of a Goalkeeper - close-in weapon system .

For the anti-ship use the frigates are equipped with two quad starter for RGM-84 Harpoon - anti-ship missiles . Four torpedo tubes for Mark 46 lightweight torpedoes complete the armament.

Since the ships were built for use against air targets, they were particularly heavily armed here. In front of the bridge there is a Mk. 29 eight - fold launcher for RIM-7 Sea Sparrow anti-aircraft missiles, and a Mk. 13 starter for 40 standard missiles was aft Installed. Instead, a hangar for helicopters was dispensed with.

An LW 08 Long Range Air Surveillance Radar and a WM25 search and tracking radar supply the data for the SEWACO II EDP system with Link 11 data connection and satellite communication . A scout navigation radar supports the navigation of the ship. A Westinghouse AN / SQS-509 bow sonar enables the location of underwater targets.

units

The ships were named after General Jacob van Heemskerk and Admiral Witte de With .
