Egbert Bartholomeusz Kortenaer (* 1604 in Groningen ; † June 13, 1665 in the naval battle near Lowestoft ) was a Dutch admiral .

As usual in Dutch , Bartholomeusz stands for Bartholomeuszoon (son of Bartholomäus). His second name is also given with Meeuwisz (Meeuwiszoon) (which is also derived from Bartholomäus).

Life

Kortenaer came from a humble background and served up as a sailor. In 1626 he became a boatswain and in 1636 a second mate. In the First Anglo-Dutch War he was first mate on the flagship Brederode in 1652 and lost his right hand and one eye in the sea battle at Dungeness . When Admiral Maarten Tromp was killed in the naval battle at Scheveningen , he held up the admiral's standard to keep the fleet upright and to prevent confusion, and effectively took command. In 1653 he became captain. In the sea battle in the Oresund (1658) he was flag captain on the Eendrachtand repulsed the Swedish attacks, while his admiral Jacob van Wassenaer Obdam fell out with gout . 1659 he was vice admiral and by Friedrich III. (Denmark and Norway) awarded and ennobled with the Order of the Elephants . In 1665 he became Lieutenant-Admiral of the Admiralty of the Meuse in Rotterdam . In the sea battle near Lowestoft , which was fatal for the Dutch , he was second in command behind Jacob van Wassenaer Obdam. He was fatally wounded on the Groot Hollandia when a cannonball hit him in the hip.

His grave inscription by Gerard Brandt reads: De Heldt der Maes verminckt aen oog, en righthandt, En real 't oog van' t Roer de vuyst van 't Vaderlandt, De groote Kortenaer de schrick van' s vyands vlooten, D'ontsluyter van de sondt leyt in dit graf beslooten ( the hero of the Meuse robbed of eye and right hand, but the eye of the oar and the fist of the fatherland, the great Kortenaer the terror of the enemy fleets, the conqueror of the sound lies locked in this grave ).

Several Dutch warships and the Kortenaer class were named after him.
