Philip Andrew Jones , KCB , DL (born February 14, 1960 in Bebington , Metropolitan Borough of Wirral , England ) is a former British admiral in the Royal Navy , who was First Sea Lord and Chief of Naval Staff between 2016 and 2019 .

Life

Naval officer and ship commander

Captain Philip Jones was between December 1999 and 2001 commander of HMS Coventry , a frigate of Broadsword-class .

Philip Andrew Jones, son of Edgar Jones and his wife Lilian Peters, began after visiting the Birkenhead School studying at Mansfield College of the University of Oxford . After training as a naval officer at the Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth , he joined the Royal Navy in 1980 and then found numerous posts as a naval and staff officer. He was among other things as captain at sea (Captain) between December 1999 and 2001 in command of the HMS Coventry , a frigate of the Broadsword class . He then released Rear Admiral Robert Cooling as Assistant Chief of the Naval Staff, Policy, and held this position until December 2011, when Rear Admiral Matthew John Parr succeeded him there.

Promotion to Admiral and First Sea Lord

As the successor to Vice Admiral George Zambellas Vice Admiral Jones took over in December 2011, the post of deputy commander of the fleet (Deputy Commander, The Fleet) . He held this position for almost a year until November 2012 and was the last holder of this position. He then succeeded Admiral George Zambellas again in November 2012, this time as Commander-in-Chief, The Fleet . He held this position until his replacement by Vice Admiral Ben Key in February 2016. At the same time, he also took on the role of Deputy Chief of the Naval Staff . For his services he was beaten on June 14, 2014 to Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (KCB) and from then on carried the suffix "Sir".

Last Admiral Philip Jones was re successor to Admiral George Zambellas than in April 2016 First Sea Lord (First Sea Lord) . He served in that role until his retirement from active military service in June 2019 at the same time Chief of Naval Staff (Chief of the Naval Staff) . Admiral Tony Radakin succeeded him in these offices in June 2019 . In February 2019, he was Deputy Lieutenant of the County of Hampshire .

His marriage to Elizabeth Collins in 1987 resulted in a son and two daughters.
