Order of Nakhimov

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Order of Nakhimov ( Russian Ордөн Нахимова / Order Nachimowa ) was the second highest Order of the Soviet Seekriegsflotte . It was named after the Russian admiral Nakhimov , who fought in the Crimean War.

The two-class order was donated on March 3, 1944 together with the Ushakov Order by the Soviet government under Josef Stalin and was reserved for awarding to admirals and officers. In order to be awarded the medal in the first class, it was necessary to demonstrate a cleverly worked out and skilfully carried out operation in the cooperation of all naval forces from a defensive position and the destruction and pursuit of the forces of a numerically superior sea enemy. The medal in the second class could be awarded for skillful and daring combat, to cite just two examples of reasons for the award.

Design of the order

Order star

In both classes the medal consists of a domed star with a medallion. The filling of the spaces between the rays consists of bundles of rays. The medallion has a diameter of 29 mm and shows Nakhimov's head turned to the left on a blue enameled background (1st class; the second class had no enamel). Above the head the inscription " АДМИРАЛ НАХИМОВ " (German: "Admiral Nachimow") is attached. Below the image are two laurel branches with a hammer and sickle in the middle. The medallion is completed by a pearl circle and an anchor chain. The rays of the star are set with rubies in the first grade, while they are enameled red in the second grade. The rays are underlaid by metal webs ending in anchors.

Together with the Order of Victory and the Order of Ushakov, the Order of Nakhimov, with 80 awards in the first and 460 in the second class, is one of the most economical awards.
