Order of Ushakov

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Order of Ushakov ( Russian Орден Ушакова / Orden Uschakowa ) was the highest order of the naval navy of the USSR . It ranks above the order of Nakhimo . The order was named after Ushakov , a Russian admiral.

The two-class medal was founded on March 3, 1944 by the government under Josef Stalin and awarded to officers and admirals. The first class was awarded, for example, for the destruction of enemy naval forces or coastal bases. To be awarded the second class, for example, one had to demonstrate the destruction of considerable opposing forces against a numerically superior opponent.

The order consisted of a domed and multiple broken star, an anchor and a medallion. To the anchor belonged a chain starting at the top right, which encloses the medallion. The medallion was 23 mm in diameter. It showed the portrait of Ushakov in a blue enameled field and the inscription АДМИРАЛ УШАКОВ (German: Admiral Uschakow). A rope-shaped edge belonged to the medallion. The order star of the first class showed a laurel branch between the anchor and the medallion on the left and an oak branch on the right. The Soviet coat of arms, consisting of a hammer and sickle, was located at the intersection of the branches or above the tip of the anchor. The order consisted of platinum (star) and gold (medallion) in the first class, and gold and silver in the second class .

The order of first class was awarded approx. 50 times, the order of second class approx. 200 times. 12 naval associations were also honored with the second class medal. The first award of the Ushakov Order, First Class, took place on May 16, 1944.
