Arseny Grigoryevich Golovko ( Russian Арсений Григорьевич Головко ., Scientific transliteration Arseniy Golovko Grigorjevič ; born June 10 . Jul / 23. June  1906 greg. In prokhladny in the North Caucasus ; † 17th May 1962 in Moscow ) was a Soviet admiral .

Life

He joined the Soviet fleet in 1925 and graduated from the Naval Officer School in Leningrad in 1928 . He then served in various Soviet fleets, including as a flag blocking officer and chief of staff of a torpedo speedboat brigade . In 1937 and 1938 he took part in the Spanish Civil War on the side of the left-wing government . After returning to the USSR , Golovko attended the Naval War Academy .

On June 4, 1940 he was promoted to rear admiral and then appointed commander of a torpedo boat flotilla in the Baltic Fleet . He then served in various positions in the Soviet naval fleet. On August 7, 1940 he was appointed commander of the Northern Fleet , which secured the Murmansk area . His fleet monitored the entrance to Kola Bay from the German troops who had broken into Norway . On September 16, 1941 he was appointed Vice Admiral .

At the beginning of 1944, the northern fleet, reinforced to protect the Murmansk convoys, had 23 submarines, 8 destroyers, 20 patrol ships, 14 torpedo boats, 63 patrol boats and 353 aircraft. At Golowko's suggestion, some of the torpedo boats were relocated to the air force base in Pummanki, which improved the interaction between the pilots in the fight against the German submarines. For his services as leader of the Northern Fleet, he was promoted to Fleet Admiral on March 31, 1944 . In mid-October 1944, during the Petsamo-Kirkenes operation , he commanded the successful amphibious landing near Liinahamari and, in cooperation with the troops of the Soviet 14th Army, secured the ore and nickel areas in the Petsamo area .

In 1956 he was appointed 1st Deputy Commander in Chief of the Soviet Naval Fleet . Golovko was awarded the Order of Lenin four times, the Order of the Red Banner four times, the Order of Ushakov twice and numerous other domestic and foreign orders and medals for his services .
