Nikolai Ivanovich Smirnov ( Russian Николай Иванович Смирнов ; born September 22 . Jul / 5 October  1917 greg. In the village Rjabzewo, Government Moscow (now Oblast Kostroma ), †  8. July 1992 in Moscow ) was a Soviet Commodore .

Life

Smirnow comes from the family of a farmer. He completed two courses at the Engineering Institute for Industrial Plant Construction and joined the Soviet naval fleet in 1937 . In 1939 he graduated from the Naval War College MW Frunze and served as a navigational officer , later as chief officer , on ships of the Pacific Fleet and as commander of a submarine . He became a member of the CPSU in 1942 and completed higher special courses for senior officers.

Second World War

As commander of a submarine, later as chief of staff and commander of a submarine division , Smirnov fought in the Black Sea Fleet from 1944 onwards during World War II .

post war period

After the end of the war he worked from 1950 to 1953 in the position of deputy chief and chief of staff of the Black Sea Fleet. From 1953 to 1956 he was chief of staff of a submarine association, from 1956 to 1957 commander of the submarine forces of the Black Sea Fleet and from 1959 to 1960 of the Baltic Fleet . In 1959 he successfully graduated from the Military Academy of the General Staff and worked until 1964 as Chief of Staff and 1st Deputy Commander of the Black Sea Fleet. He continued his work as chief of command and deputy chief of the main staff of the Soviet Navy until 1969, after which he commanded the Pacific Fleet. On November 5, 1973, Smirnov was promoted to Fleet Admiral. In September 1974 he took over the function of First Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Soviet Navy Gorshkov and helped build the fleet. He was one of the officers who opposed the Gorshkov multipurpose fleet and supported the priority expansion of the nuclear submarine fleet. After the sinking of the Musson in 1987, Smirnov headed the investigative commission to investigate the accident during an anti-aircraft exercise.

By resolution of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR on February 17, 1984, he was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union and the Order of Lenin and the Golden Star medal . From 1988 to 1992 Smirnov worked in the group of inspectors general of the Soviet Ministry of Defense.

From 1971 to 1976 he was a candidate for the Central Committee of the CPSU and from 1970 to 1989 a member of the Supreme Soviet.

He lived in Moscow and was buried in the Novodevichy Cemetery , Section 11.
