The St. Thomas Gymnasium Wettenhausen is a school in the Swabian district of Günzburg with musical, economic and sporting offers. The sponsor is the Schulwerk of the Diocese of Augsburg .

location

The school is located on the area of the Dominican nunnery Wettenhausen , in the idyllic rural setting of the Swabian Baroque corner between Ulm and Augsburg. It belongs to the district of Wettenhausen in the municipality of Kammeltal .

History and present

The history of the school goes back to 1866. The Dominicans of the St. Ursula Convent in Augsburg founded a teacher training institute for girls in Wettenhausen under the direction of Sr. M. Aquinata Lauer. From the school year 1935/36 on, the nuns were no longer allowed to accept female students at their private teacher training institute.

In connection with the educational expansion in the 1960s, future teachers were trained at teacher training colleges. The monastic educational establishment remained as a seven-level "Musisches Gymnasium", which was replaced in 1972 by the nine-level. Since 1976 boys have also been attending the grammar school, which was handed over to the diocese of Augsburg in 1981. With the retirement of the long-time director, Sr. M. Veneranda Vetter, the school administration passed into "secular" hands for the first time in 1978.

The training facility, still known as the Thomas School , was attended by around 600 students in the 2017/18 school year. Since it is a Catholic school, there are numerous services during the school year, especially on Christian holidays. In addition, special services with selected topics are celebrated for the lower grades, in which the ecumenical idea comes first. Attending religious instruction is compulsory. Catholic and Protestant students attend classes appropriate to their denomination.

A day care center is attached to the grammar school, which is continued in the tradition of the Dominican convent.

The choir school under the direction of Jürgen Rettenmaier has already performed in several European countries, including at a mass in the Vatican . Some CDs are marketed commercially.
