Pedro Ercílio Simon
Pedro Ercílio Simon (born September 9, 1941 in Ibiaçá , † June 1, 2020 in Passo Fundo ) was a Brazilian clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Passo Fundo .
Life
Ercílio Simon entered an episcopal boys' seminary in Passo Fundo when he was 10 years old . On December 12, 1965 he was ordained priest for the diocese of Passo Fundo . He was a priest in the diocese of Erexim and vicar general in the diocese of Passo Fundo. He was committed to promoting vocations as pastoral coordinator and first rector of the Nossa Senhora Aparecida seminar . He was also active in pastoral care in the Nossa Senhora Aparecida cathedral and in the parishes of São Judas Tadeu, São Cristóvão and Sagrado Coração de Jesus.
Pope John Paul II appointed him coadjutor of the Bishop of Cruz Alta on October 24, 1990 . The Apostolic Nuncio in Brazil, Archbishop Carlo Furno , donated his episcopal ordination on December 30th of the same year. Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Passo Fundo, Urbano José Allgayer , and the Bishop of Cruz Alta, Jacó Roberto Hilgert . His motto is "Em Nome de Jesus" ( In the name of Jesus ). Between 1991 and 1995 he was coadjutor bishop in the diocese of Cruz Alta .
On July 5, 1995, he was appointed Bishop of Uruguaiana . Three years later, on September 16, 1998, he was appointed coadjutor bishop of Passo Fundo. With the age-related resignation of Urbano José Allgayer on May 19, 1999, he succeeded him as Bishop of Passo Fundo. Together with the "Regional Conference South 3" of the Brazilian Bishops' Conference CNBB, from 2001 to 2004 he was its general secretary and reference bishop for the pastoral care of migrants. With the elevation of the diocese to the Archdiocese of Passo Fundo on April 13, 2011, he was appointed its first archbishop.
Soon after his appointment as Archbishop, it was revealed that Ercílio Simon had Parkinson's disease . The onset of Alzheimer's disease also occurred. Pope Benedict XVI accepted his early resignation on July 11, 2012. He died in June 2020 of complications from his health problems at the age of 78 in the São Vicente de Paulo hospital in Passo Fundo.
