Augusto Petró

Augusto Petró (born May 3, 1918 in Santo Antônio da Patrulha , Rio Grande do Sul , Brazil ; † October 28, 2008 in Ivoti , Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil) was Bishop of Uruguaiana .

Life

Augusto Petró studied philosophy and theology at the seminary in São Leopoldo from 1938 to 1944 . He also studied canon law at the Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS) in Porto Alegre . He was ordained a priest on November 30, 1944 .

Pope Pius XII appointed him in 1958 the second bishop of the Diocese of Vacaria in the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. He received his episcopal consecration on July 27, 1958, the Archbishop of Porto Alegre and later Cardinal Alfredo Vicente Scherer ; Co- consecrators were Walmor Battú Wichrowski , auxiliary bishop in Santos, and the bishop of Passo Fundo João Cláudio Colling . His motto was Fac et vives (“Do that and you will live”).

Pope Paul VI appointed him bishop of the Uruguaiana diocese in 1964 . His age-related resignation was granted in 1995 by John Paul II .
