Angelo Cardinal Felici (born July 26, 1919 in Segni , Province of Rome , Italy , † June 17, 2007 in Rome ) was a Curia Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Angelo Felici studied Catholic theology and philosophy . On April 4, 1942, he received the sacrament of ordination in the chapel of the Pontifical Latin American College "Pius" . After further studies at the Pontifical Lateran University , the Pontifical Diplomatic Academy and the Pontifical Gregorian University , he received his doctorate in canon law . In 1945 he was appointed secretary of the Congregation for Extraordinary Ecclesiastical Affairs. Because of his great diplomatic skills, he was given many delicate missions, including the talks in Jerusalem after the Six Day War . In addition, Felici regularly gave theological lectures at papal universities.

In 1967 Pope Paul VI appointed him . the Titular Archbishop of Caesariana and sent him as apostolic nuncio in the Netherlands . The episcopal ordination received his Amleto Giovanni Cicognani Cardinal on September 24, 1967 at St. Peter's Basilica ; Co- consecrators were Archbishop Giovanni Benelli and Bishop Luigi Maria Carli .

In 1969 at the “Pastoraal Concilie” of the Netherlands in Noordwijkerhout , 90 votes to 6 demanded the abolition of the centuries-old celibacy rule for Catholic priests. "Celibacy should no longer be compulsory for future priests," was the decision in the Netherlands. As Apostolic Nuncio, Felici had left the room in protest immediately before the vote.

From 1976 to 1979 he worked as Apostolic Nuncio in Portugal , from 1979 to 1988 in the same position in France .

In 1988 Pope John Paul II accepted him as a cardinal deacon with the titled deaconry Santi Biagio e Carlo ai Catinari in the college of cardinals and appointed him prefect of the Congregation for the Saints . In 1999 he was raised to cardinal priest pro hac vice while retaining his titular church . From 1995 to 2000 he was President of the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei . He did not take part in the 2005 conclave because the age limit was exceeded.

He died in 2007 of the aftermath of a fall in 1999 in which he broke his thigh. The celebration of the exequies led by Pope Benedict XVI. took place on June 19, 2007 in St. Peter's Basilica.
