Stanisław Marian Cardinal Ryłko (born July 4, 1945 in Andrychów , Poland ) is a Polish clergyman and curia cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

After studying Catholic theology , Ryłko received the sacrament of ordination on March 30, 1969 from the Krakow Archbishop Karol Wojtyła, who later became Pope John Paul II .

On December 20, 1995, John Paul II appointed him titular Archbishop of Novica and secretary of the Pontifical Council for the Laity, and on January 6, 1996, he was ordained a bishop ; Co-consecrators were the Archbishops Giovanni Battista Re and Jorge María Mejía . On October 4, 2003, John Paul II appointed him President of the Pontifical Council for the Laity . After his election, Pope Benedict XVI confirmed . Ryłko in this office. Pope Francis also confirmed him provisionally on September 24, 2013 and permanently on February 6, 2014 as President of the Lay Council.

The Italian news agency ANSA speculated in 2006 about a possible succession of Ryłko to Józef Cardinal Glemp as Archbishop of Warsaw , but this turned out to be a false speculation after the appointment of Stanisław Wielgus and later Kazimierz Nycz .

On November 24, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI took him. as cardinal deacon with the title deaconry Sacro Cuore di Cristo Re in the cardinals college.

With the dissolution of the Pontifical Council for Laity on September 1, 2016, Ryłko's activity as its president ended.

Pope Francis appointed him Archpriest of the Patriarchal Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore on December 28, 2016 . On 19 May 2018 he was retaining his title as Diaconia titular church pro hac vice to Cardinal priests appointed.

Working in Germany

In the 1970s he regularly took over the vacation replacement in the parish of Elsdorf near Cologne . He still maintains contact with this community today. He was involved in the preparation and implementation of the 2005 World Youth Day in Cologne, where he celebrated several masses. On April 10, 2008, the German Ambassador to the Holy See, Hans-Henning Horstmann, presented him with the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany with a star and shoulder ribbon awarded by Federal President Horst Köhler .
