Cardinal Kazimierz Nycz (born February 1, 1950 in Stara Wieś , Poland ) is a Polish clergyman and Archbishop of Warsaw .

Life

Kazimierz Nycz was born in Stara Wieś , the "Old Village" near Auschwitz . In 1967 he entered the seminary in Cracow and studied theology and philosophy. On May 8, 1972 Kazimierz Nycz was by the then Archbishop of Krakow Cardinal Karol Józef Wojtyla to ordained deacon . On May 20, 1973, Kazimierz Nycz received the sacrament of ordination by the Krakow auxiliary bishop Julian Groblicki . He was chaplain in Jaworzno-Szczakowa and Raciborowice Górne for two years . In 1976 he finished studying theology at the Pontifical Faculty of Theology in Cracow . He finished his doctoral studies at the Catholic University of Lublin , which began in 1977 , in 1981 with the thesis "Realizacja odnowy katechetycznej Soboru Watykańskiego II w archidiecezji krakowskiej" (Eng. The implementation of the catechetical renewal of the Second Vatican Council in the Archdiocese of Krakow ).

From 1981 he worked for the Department of Catechesis in the Metropolitan Curia of Cracow. In addition, Kazimierz Nycz was employed in the parish pastoral care of Skawina . In 1987 he became a lecturer in catechetics at the Pontifical Theological Academy in Cracow and Subregens of the Cracow Seminary .

On May 14, 1988, Pope John Paul II appointed him titular bishop of Villa Regis and auxiliary bishop in Krakow. He received his episcopal ordination on June 4th of the same year by Cardinal Franciszek Macharski . On November 26, 1999, the Polish Bishops' Conference elected him President of the Commission for Catholic Education with a special focus on catechesis . He developed the teaching documents “The Curriculum of Religion” (Program nauczania religii), “Curriculum Catechism of the Catholic Church in Poland” (Podstawa programowa katechezy Kościoła katolickiego w Polsce) and “Directory for the Catechesis of the Catholic Church in Poland” (Dyrektorium katechetyczne Kościoła. Kościoła katolickiego w Polsce). Since December 2004 Nycz has been a member of the Permanent Council of the Polish Bishops' Conference. He is chairman of the board of trustees of the New Millennium Foundation . He chairs the Audit Committee and is a member of the Standing Committee, the Council on Social Communications and the Panel on Social Aspects.

On March 3, 2007 Pope Benedict XVI appointed him . as Archbishop of Warsaw as the successor to the resigned Archbishop Stanisław Wielgus . The canonical seizure of the archdiocese through the enthronement of the new archbishop in the St. John's Cathedral in Warsaw took place on April 1, 2007.

The coat of arms shows a golden cross with an elongated crossbar on a blue background. Under the cross Mary, the miraculous image of Kalwaria Zebrzydowska a place of pilgrimage in the diocese of Krakow. The coat of arms is modeled on the Pope's coat of arms, John Paul II , which also shows an M, symbolically - Mary under the cross - under an elongated crossbar of the cross.

Behind the coat of arms is the bishop's cross, above the green bishop's hat ( Galero ) with six green tassels (fiocchi) underneath the motto.

His motto Ex Hominibus per Hominibus ("by the people for the people") comes from the letter of the apostle Paul to the Hebrews ( Heb 5,1  EU ).

The coat of arms shows a red crossbar on a blue background, running from top left to bottom right. At the top right a red and a silver / white crown, on the left a gold shepherd's staff (bishop's staff) and a paddle crossed over a silver / white miter. Below the silver and white wavy lines.

The coat of arms refers to Auschwitz, the birthplace of Kazimier Nyzc. The red crossbar symbolizes martyrdom, but also the passion of Christ. The two crowns (red for martyrs / white for confessors) in the blue sky, symbolic for all victims in the Auschwitz concentration camp who achieve the crown of life in heaven. Staff, paddle and miter are among the insignia or pontificals of a Catholic bishop.

The wavy lines represent the habitat of the Baltic Sea on whose coastline the Koszalin-Kołobrzeg diocese is located in the Pomeranian Voivodeship.

Archbishop of Warsaw
