Marian Gołębiewski (born September 22, 1937 in Trzebuchów, Powiat Kolski , Poland ) is retired Archbishop of Breslau .

Life

After graduating from high school, Marian Gołębiewski studied philosophy and Catholic theology at the seminary in Włocławek . He was ordained a priest on June 24, 1962 and was then chaplain in Ślesin and then in Zduńska Wola . From 1966 he studied at the Catholic University of Lublin and obtained a licentiate in theology in 1969 . He then completed his studies at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome with a licentiate in Biblical Studies . Pope John Paul II awarded him the honorary title of chaplain of His Holiness ( Monsignor ) on December 1, 1994 .

In 1975 he became a doctor of theology doctorate and was a lecturer at the seminary in Włocławek, the rain he was from 1983 to 1992. From 1992 to 1993 he was a fellow at the Institut Catholique de Paris and completed his habilitation in 1994 at the Catholic Theological Academy in Warsaw, where he received a professorship for biblical studies.

On July 20, 1996, Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Koszalin-Kołobrzeg . The episcopal ordination took place on August 31 of the same year by the Apostolic Nuncio in Poland, Archbishop Józef Kowalczyk .

On April 3, 2004 he was appointed Archbishop of Wroclaw to succeed Cardinal Henryk Roman Gulbinowicz .

Marian Gołębiewski was a member of the Pontifical Council for Pastoral Care for Migrants and People on the Move . In the Polish Bishops' Conference he was a member of the Biblical Science Section of the Doctrine of the Faith Commission.

In 2011, the Catholic German Student Union Winfridia Breslau Münster (KDSt.V.) named him protector of the student union originally from Breslau.

On May 18, 2013, Pope Francis accepted Marian Gołębiewski's resignation because of his age.
