The Foundation "Work of the New Millennium" (Polish: "Dzieło Nowego Tysiąclecia") was established in 2000 in response of the Polish Church to the words of Pope John Paul II , which he addressed to the Polish people during his pilgrimage in 1999 judged. The Holy Father drew attention to the dynamic changes in civilization and society in 1989, which, while necessary and inevitable, at the same time led to an increase in poverty. This change affected to a large extent the young people, who often had little chance of further development due to limited access to education. The representative of the Polish episcopate made the decision to set up a foundation with the aim of helping gifted young people from poor and disadvantaged regions.

These young people became "the living monument of Johann Paul II." called. At the beginning of its activity, the foundation supported around 500 young people from 5 dioceses. After just two years, schoolchildren and students from all dioceses received financial help. Today the foundation has over 2500 scholarship holders.

The students take part in an educational program designed to shape their attitudes as citizens and Christians. Students who set up communities in their cities have set similar goals. Two-week summer camps are organized for all scholarship holders. The students from grammar schools and high schools get to know different regions of Poland and their cultural and scientific wealth.

Another important role of the foundation is the organization of the “Papal Day” across Poland. The celebration takes place on the Sunday before the anniversary of the election of Karol Wojtyła as Pope. Every year the foundation awards the TOTUS Prize to people or institutions whose activities are based on papal teaching and contribute to the promotion of human dignity in everyday life.

From the beginning, the aim of the foundation has been to make the special pontificate of John Paul II, the Pope beloved by Poles, unforgettable in various ways.
