Gianfranco Girotti OFMConv (born April 21, 1937 in Rome , Italy ) is a curial bishop emeritus of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Gianfranco Girotti received on 17 February 1963, the sacrament of Holy Orders . He was at the Pontifical Lateran University for Doctor of Laws PhD . Girotti earned a diploma as a lawyer at the Roman Rota and a licentiate in the subject Catholic Theology at the Pontifical Theological Faculty of St. Bonaventure ( Seraphicum ).

In 1969 Gianfranco Girotti joined the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith . In 1980 he became professor of canon law at the Pontifical Urban University . He was also the prison chaplain of the Roman prison "Regina Coeli" . Girotti was the procurator of the Minorite Order. He also worked as a judge at the Court of Appeal for the Latium Church Region and as Vice-President of the Associazione Canonistica Italiana . On June 11, 1997, Pope John Paul II appointed him Undersecretary of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

On February 16, 2002, Pope John Paul II appointed him Regent of the Apostolic Penitentiary . In addition, Gianfranco Girotti became consultor of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. On November 15, 2006, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him . as titular bishop of Meta . He was ordained bishop on December 16, 2006, Cardinal Secretary of State Tarcisio Bertone SDB ; Co-consecrators were the Kardinalgroßpönitentiar James Stafford and the archivist and librarian of Holy Roman Church , Jean-Louis Cardinal Tauran .

On June 26, 2012, Benedict XVI. the resignation from the office of Regent of the Apostolic Penitentiary, put forward by Gianfranco Girotti for reasons of age.
