Michael Theunissen

Michael Theunissen (born October 11, 1932 in Berlin ; † April 18, 2015 there ) was a German philosopher .

biography

Theunissen studied philosophy and German in Bonn and Freiburg . In 1955 he received his doctorate from Sören Kierkegaard with Max Müller in Freiburg with the work The Concept “Ernst” , and he completed his habilitation in Berlin in 1964 with Der Andere: Studien zur Sozialontologie der Gegenwart . In 1967 he took over a professorship in philosophy at the University of Bern in Switzerland and was appointed to the University of Heidelberg in 1971 . From 1980 until his retirement in 1998 he held the chair for theoretical philosophy at the Free University of Berlin . The main areas of his research and publications were the philosophy of Hegel and Kierkegaard , modern social philosophy and phenomenology , the philosophy of the time as well as the ancient Greek poet Pindar and archaic Greek poetry. In 2003 he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Faculty of Culture and Social Sciences at the University of Lucerne . Another honorary doctorate was awarded to him on April 13, 2005 by the theological faculty of the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen.

"His numerous, astute and learned writings on the philosophy of modern times and antiquity have made Michael Theunissen one of the most prominent contemporary philosophers in the professional world," said Joachim Ringleben , systematist at the Göttingen Theological Faculty, who also called the scientist an "academic Teacher with an unusually large charisma ”. Theunissen has a special meaning for theology and the philosophy of religion through his work on the I-Thou relationship, on revelation, on philosophical Christology, on despair and on prayer.

His theological and philosophical work has received numerous honors and prizes, such as B. the Dr. Leopold Lucas Prize 2001, the Karl Jaspers Prize (Heidelberg, 2004), the Hegel Prize (Stuttgart, 2015 posthumously) and several honorary doctorates. Emil Angehrn and Uwe Justus Wenzel are among his students .
