Halverde is a district of the municipality of Hopsten on the northern tip of the Westphalian region of Tecklenburger Land ( Steinfurt district ).

geography

The area of the district Halverde is 17.17 km². Halverde is surrounded by the towns of Recke , Hopsten, Shell and Voltlage . It consists of the village Halverde and farming communities Langenacker, Easter Bauer and Westerbauer.

history

The name Halverde is made up of the syllables hal ( moor , swamp) and verde ( vore = ford), i.e. moor ford. The Halverder Moor is a residual wetland area of this former moor.

The first documented reference dates back to 1150, when a court in Halverde (Halfart) was donated to the Bishop of Osnabrück by Count Heinrich I of Tecklenburg . An entry in the Corveyer income register from the 12th century is the first documentary evidence of the village of Halverde. This is a land donation document from the noble Wigbold von Horstmar to Bishop Arnold von Osnabrück, which can be dated to the year 1189. Accordingly, goods from Halverde should be transferred for the new monastery to be built in Recke . In the course of history, the sovereigns and sovereignty changed and with it also the religious affiliation. The first independent church services are said to have taken place on a peasant hall from 1784.

Until January 1, 1811, the village of Halverde with the farmers Langenacker, Osterbauer, Westerbauer belongs to the parish of Recke. From this point in time, the church, which was approved in 1788 and built in 1790, received its independence from the Recker Church. On June 8, 1790, the first mass was celebrated in the church dedicated to the apostles Peter and Paul. After a short period of independence, Halverde belonged to the mayor's office in shell from 1815 to 1851 and to the shell office from 1851. This assignment was followed by the Hopsten office from February 1930 to December 31, 1974 .

By expanding the area of the Meppen shooting range , four families from the dissolved village of Wahn were settled in Halverde in 1939 . On February 21, 1945 at 15:00 the Kreienfeld was American bombers bombed . However, there was only minor damage to property.

With the territorial reform on January 1, 1975, the office was dissolved and Halverde was incorporated into the community of Hopsten. In church terms, the Catholics of the village of Schal belong to the parish of Halverde to this day.

Attractions

Halverde oil and grain mill

The Overmeyer oil and grain mill is a special attraction. It is one of the last remaining double water mills in Westphalia . This type of mill, which was once so typical for Westphalia, has almost died out.

The Catholic Church of St. Peter and Paul is located in the center of the village.

The house where Clement sister Maria Euthymia was born is also located in Halverde with the memorial path laid out.

Specialty

For a time, Halverde was one of the few places in Germany, along with the Hopsten district of Shell , where two different Volksbanks ( VR-Bank Kreis Steinfurt and Volksbank Süd-Emsland ) had a branch. This has happened through the announced withdrawal of the former Volksbank Tecklenburger Land from Halverde. Volksbank Süd-Emsland had agreed to open a branch upon request. Thereupon the former Volksbank Tecklenburger Land withdrew the intended task of the Halverder branch. Years later it was agreed that the Volksbank Kreis Steinfurt should keep a branch in Halverde, while the shell was transferred to the Volksbank Süd-Emsland.
