VR-Bank Kreis Steinfurt has existed since 2013, as a result of the merger of Volksbank Nordmünsterland and Volksbank Tecklenburger Land. The Volksbank Nordmünsterland was taken over by the larger Volksbank Tecklenburger Land and renamed VR-Bank Kreis Steinfurt. It is embedded in the cooperative financial network and belongs to the Federal Association of German Volksbanks and Raiffeisenbanks (BVR) based in Berlin and the Cooperative Association - Association of Regions eV based in Münster .
After a good three years of intensive cooperation and preparation, the representatives gave their consent to the merger in July 2020 at the representative meetings of Vereinigte Volksbank Münster eG, Volksbank Greven eG and VR-Bank Kreis Steinfurt eG. Upon registration, the three institutes will operate under the name Volksbank Münsterland Nord eG. With total assets of a good 6.6 billion euros, the new Volksbank is one of the largest Volksbanks in Germany.
