St. Peter and Paul

The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Peter and Paul is a listed church building in Halverde , a district of the municipality of Hopsten , in the Westphalian region of Tecklenburger Land ( Steinfurt district ). It houses a memorial to Sister Maria Euthymia, who was born in Halverde and was later beatified .

History and architecture

The church building was erected in 1788 with the permission of the King of Prussia Friedrich Wilhelm II. He approved a prayer house without a tower. The first mass was celebrated in 1792. The parish has been a parish since 1824 .

The church is a simple, plastered quarry stone hall with a flat-arched wooden ceiling. The 26 meter high west tower was added in 1854, its upper floors were renewed after a designation in 1881. The oldest remaining bell was cast in 1854. A spiral staircase was built into the tower in 1954. The five-axis building was extended to the east by two additional axes with a choir closed on three sides (11.4 meters), and a sacristy was added from 1959 to 1963.

At Christmas time, a spacious nativity scene is set up in the church, which extends over three levels. This tradition was founded in 1932 by a joiner and cabinet maker who moved from the Ruhr area and who took the nativity scene built in the Franciscan Church in Essen as a model. The figures in the Nazarene style were obtained from the Fathers of St. Arnold near Rheine. From a group of cast-like angels in different colors, each one carries a banner with the opening verse of a popular Christmas carol. For the first of January, the former feast of the circumcision of the Lord, the figure of a Levite is placed at the manger, formerly directly behind the depiction of the Christ child.
