The Süchtelner Heights are the highest elevations in the Viersen district at 90.70 m. They belong to the Süchteln district of Viersen .

Attractions

The Irmgardiskapelle , the symbol of Süchteln, is located on the Süchtelner Heights . This chapel was founded in 1664 in honor of St. Irmgardis , who, according to tradition, lived as a hermit for a long time on the Süchtelner heights. One of the three hospitals in Viersen and the old people's home in Süchteln, the Irmgardis pen, are named after St. Irmgardis. In 1907, an earth tank was built as a water storage tank on the Süchtelner Heights , and it was in operation until 1969. The property has been a listed building with list number 439 since 2002.

sport and freetime

The Süchtelner heights offer many opportunities to do sports or spend your free time. There is a very large beer garden, with the “Volksbank-Arena” (former “Waldkampfbahn”) a public artificial turf pitch, a grass pitch, a skater track, a BMX cross track, a mini golf course and a climbing forest . The Süchtelner Heights are also suitable for mountain biking, horse riding and hiking. One of the oldest leisure attractions on the Süchtelner Heights is the game reserve, which used to be known nationwide.

history

From September 25, 1944, the Wehrmacht had Volkssturm men and prisoners of war dig trenches and tank trenches on the Süchtelner Heights . They were part of the "Niers-Rur position". First 240 men began the earthworks; by October 5, 1944, their number grew to 6,200 to 6,500 men. The trenches built for anti-tank defense had a standard width of 4.50 m and a depth of 3 m.

On the morning of March 1, 1945, Dülken was occupied by soldiers of the 84th US Infantry Division almost without a fight. A little north of Dülken, in the peasant communities of Bistard and Schirick, at the southern foot of the Süchtelner Heights, soldiers of the Wehrmacht offered temporary resistance. The US troops called for reinforcements and overcame the resistance on and on the Süchtelner Heights under the protection of artificial fog.

Until the 1950s, international sports fights and horse races were held in Süchteln. There was also a very large motocross track . The Süchtelner Höhenbad, which has been closed since 2010, was also very well known.

In January 2018, the climbing forest in the Süchtelner heights was completely destroyed by storm Frederike . Around 15,000 trees near the climbing forest and the game reserve were blown over. A new climbing forest is being planned. 90% of the trees destroyed were spruce and other conifers. A reforestation of the area is in progress. City forester Kammann said that the forest will look different after reforestation than before. 50% of the new trees should be deciduous trees, 25% conifers and 25% other tree species that have no problem with climate change. The game reserve was also damaged. The fence of the enclosure is to be repaired and the animals are to be fenced in again. Due to the damage, the wild boars were able to flee and were released to be shot after several incidents, as they showed no escape behavior, but an aggressive behavior, according to city forester Kammann.

Others

On the edge of the Süchtelner heights towards the village is the community secondary school Süchteln. In the direction of Dülken , a little outside of Süchteln, there is a former garbage dump that is no longer visible due to the forest cover.

Around one kilometer north of the Süchteln junction ( A 61 ) there is a radio tower that broadcasts the Welle Niederrhein program.
