Master of Liesborn

As a master of Liesborn one is late medieval painter called, the 1460 to 1490 in Westphalia worked. The artist, who is not known by name, got his emergency name after the Passion Altar, which he created for the Benedictine Abbey of Liesborn after 1465 . It is believed that the painter is identical to Johann von Soest .

Works and impact history

In addition to the altar from Liesborn, only a few other preserved works can be assigned to the master from Liesborn, including a passion altar in the Maria zur Höhe church in Soest . The Lünen Altar and the Lipporger Altar are also attributed to the master and his workshop . His work exerted a great influence on contemporary and subsequent Westphalian painters, for example in the works of the master of 1473 .

The master of Liesborn himself shows a strong influence by Dutch painters such as Dieric Bouts and Roger van der Weyden . As with the Annunciation scene from Liesborn, his depiction of architecture, correct perspective of the interior and details of the furniture show this relationship. The master was also familiar with painters from Cologne such as the master of the life of the Virgin Mary . The reference to the so-called Cologne School of Painting is particularly evident in the images of saints on the altar from Liesborn.

A small part of the pictures by the master von Liesborn was originally attributed to the master von Cappenberg and thus Jan Baegert .

The former Liesborn altar showed Christ on the cross in the middle, as well as other scenes from the life of Mary and saints. The altar was probably not a winged altar, but the pictures were lined up next to each other. Today it is only preserved in fragments. The Liesborn Altar, which had already been dismantled in 1704, was sold to private individuals in more than 14 individual parts at the beginning of the 19th century in the course of secularization. Significant pieces are now in the possession of the National Gallery, London and the Westphalian Art Association or the Westphalian State Museum in Münster, where they are counted among the “most beautiful and most important paintings in the collection”.

Some of the parts of the Liesborner Altar were then and are still partially attributed to the Master von Cappenberg or a workshop of the Master of the Liesborn Altar.
