synagogue

The synagogue was built in 1886 at Lindenstrasse 5. There were two large arched windows each in the north and south walls. The prayer room was on the ground floor. The women's gallery on the upper floor could be reached via a staircase. The interior was devastated during the November pogroms in 1938. Since it was feared that the flames would spread to neighboring buildings, the synagogue was not set on fire. The interior was taken to the street and burned there. In 1957 the synagogue building went into private ownership and was converted into a residential building that is still in use today.

Jewish community of Konz

The first mention of Jewish residents goes back to 1808. It was a family that had moved to Konz from the neighboring community of Könen . From the middle of the 19th century the number of members of the Jewish community rose sharply and reached its highest level in 1925 with 69 members. The community received the status of an independent synagogue community with the construction of the synagogue. Up until this point in time, the Jewish residents belonged to the Jewish community of Könen and used the synagogue there. From the end of the 19th century, the community had its own cemetery . Before that, the deceased were buried in the Jewish cemetery in Könen. The community also had its own religious school. With the seizure of power of Adolf Hitler in 1933, the repression against the Jewish population increased. This led to a large part of the Jewish population emigrating. In 1938 only 25 members of the Jewish community lived in Konz.
