The Pacocha district is located in the Ilo province of the Moquegua region in southwest Peru . The district founded on May 26, 1970 has an area of ​​338.08 km². At the 2017 census there were 4,453 residents in the district. In 1993 the population was 6413, in 2007 it was 4401. The district administration is located in the m high town of Pueblo Nuevo with 4437 inhabitants (as of 2017). Pueblo Nuevo is in the extreme south of the district. The city is located north of the mouth of the Río Ilo (Río Moquegua, Río Osmore) in the Pacific Ocean . About 3 km further south is the provincial capital Ilo .

Geographical location

The Pacocha District stretches along the Pacific coast in the north of the Ilo Province. The district has about 40 km of coastline and extends about 7 km inland to the western edge of the coastal highlands. The national road 1S ( Panamericana ) crosses the district near the coast. The climate is arid, desert vegetation dominates.

The Pacocha district borders in the extreme north on the Punta de Bombón district ( Islay province , Arequipa region ), in the northeast on the Moquegua district ( Mariscal Nieto province ), in the southeast on the El Algarrobal district and in the extreme south on the Ilo district .
