The El Algarrobal district is located in the Ilo province of the Moquegua region in southwest Peru . The district founded on May 26, 1970 has an area of 747 km². At the 2017 census, 3717 inhabitants lived in the district. In 1993 the population was 165, in 2007 it was 247. The district administration is located in the 110 m high town of El Algarrobal with 3694 inhabitants (as of 2017). El Algarrobal is located on the Río Osmore (Río Moquegua, Río Ilo), 9 km above its confluence with the Pacific Ocean . The provincial capital of Ilo is about 7 km to the west .
Geographical location
The district of El Algarrobal extends over the western part of the coastal highlands in the east of the province of Ilo. The Ilo – Moquegua highway crosses the district. The climate is arid, desert vegetation dominates. Irrigated agriculture is only practiced in the river valley of the Río Osmore.
The El Algarrobal district borders on the Pacocha district to the west, the Moquegua district ( Mariscal Nieto province ) to the north and northeast, the Ite district ( Jorge Basadre province , Tacna region ) to the southeast and the Ilo district to the southwest .
